Former homicide detective Niki Webber has been through a rough couple of years. She's a young widow and was also shot in the line of duty. Niki's now quit the force, moved from Seattle to Whidbey Island and become a private investigator. She's hired to work on her first case involving a missing girl named Chloe Reeves. But when Chloe turns up dead from what looks like an apparent suicide, Niki questions her own motives for letting her guard down on the day she was shot. While trying to put her life back together, Niki delves into Chloe's past and the events leading up to her death. Along the way she discovers that sometimes people will do just about anything to protect their secret.
