A girl with no memory is found at the site of a plane crash, finding the truth about herself will be complicated.
Sixteen-year-old Sera is the only survivor of an explosion on a plane. She wakes up in hospital to find that she has no memory. The only clue to her identity is a mysterious boy who claims she was part of a top-secret science experiment. I liked Unremembered, it was very well written, I liked the characters (mostly Cody, Zen and Sera) and the idea behind the story, the secret company that no one seems to know, even though it feels like they should be B I G, but I had hoped for a bit more explanation as to what happened to the plane (might have just been me, but I am very interested in those kind of things, I always watch those plane crash investigation programs on TV etc.) and how Sera just happened to end up right there. I started to wonder if she might have caused the plane crash at some point, when I found out about certain things.
Reading about Sera not remembering anything made me a bit sad for her at some points, but I also felt happy for Cody's parents (see I'm horrible, I can't even remember their names), because they could raise her a bit and teach her about all kinds of stuff (the scene with the grilled cheese sandwich made me so happy!)
And yes, I loved the romance between Zen and Sera, I won't say this often, but I loved reading about them, and Sera's memories of him. Yes, I ship it.
For some reason, I felt like I was missing something. I don't know what/why, but that is just how it felt to me.. Anyway, I will definitely check out the second book in the series, and not just because this book ENDS WITH A DAMN CLIFFHANGER!!!!!!!

At the beginning of the novel, all we know about Seraphina is that she was found at sea after a plane crash. She knows nothing about herself, and can’t remember her family, friends, or anything beyond waking up in the ocean. The mystery, while a little predictable if you paid attention to the clues scattered throughout, was intriguing. Unfortunately, it went exactly where I was expecting it to go, and there were very few – if any – surprises.

The only truth she can be sure of is that she likes numbers, she has a tattoo, she likes grilled cheese sandwiches... And supermarkets. She has long brown hair and purple eyes and she survived a plane crash...

Oh, how I loved Unremembered! It certainly lifted me out of my recent book funk. It's witty, intelligent and our heroine is a breath of fresh air. As 'Violet' / Sera discovers her new world without her memories, It's impossible to put down. I didn't care much for Zen, and his character was too cardboard - esk, but he only played a small role, so it felt more as an introduction to his character. It begins similar to a contemporary novel, but then slowly drifts into a science fiction novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for the second installment.

I do think that the author had a good idea when it came to Unremembered. She just failed in making it exciting. It all starts with a plane crash. Violet is pulled out of the water as the only survivor. She doesn’t remember anything about anything and for some reason she thinks it’s 1609. And oddly, there’s no record of her even being on that plane or of her existence at all. She’s placed with a foster family while the government tries to track down her family. Of course, there’s an amazingly hot teenage boy, Zen, who finds Violet and happens to have all of the answers. They run away together and trouble follows, including car chases and gun fights.
I can’t really say more about the plot without giving anything away, but I will say that it didn’t turn out how I was expecting at all. There are some interesting twists. Well, twists that should have been interesting, but were presented in a dull manner. There’s one giant info-dump at the end that explains almost everything. I also wasn’t into the romance. Violet and Zen know each other from before her memory loss so there’s no real relationship development. It’s all seen as flashbacks. Then in the story’s present, we’re just told that they’re in love, even though Violet has no clue who he is, but whatever.
Unremembered has a good premise, but it was just presented badly. There’s no standout moment that drew me in and made me want to keep reading. It was just an easy, light, mindless read that you should get through in no time. The plot is kind of cliche with the whole evil corporation doing naughty science and trying to murder teenagers who know too much. I have no clue what the sequels could possibly be about, since the ending doesn’t leave us with any sort of direction. Maybe I’ll read the next one, maybe I won’t. I’ll probably forget all about it by then.

Unremembered has everything I love in a sci-fi: genetics, evil corporations, love, technology, and conspiracy. It's almost like it was made for me! However, I have to warn you. This story isn't exactly original. It's awesome, and I loved it, but it is one of those things that has been done many, many times. It just so happens to be a "cookie cutter" that I adore, so it didn't bother me in the slightest. But if that WOULD bother you, then this book is not for you.
However, despite my love for this book, it wasn't perfect. And I'll address some of the frustrating things first:
The first ~35% of the book is clouded in mystery as the girl—Seraphina—attempts to answer all of the questions in the blurb. Why wasn't she on the manifest? Was she actually on the plane? Why aren't her fingerprints and DNA in any of the databases? This was the first frustrating thing for me, because I thought the answer was obvious, but we don't get the reveal until the 35% mark. I honestly already had a good idea of what the 'secret' was from the synopsis alone. Now, that doesn't mean the beginning was terribly boring or painful for me to read, but I did get frustrated at times because it felt like it took her AGES to figure it out.
My one other problem is with the romance. I wanted to love the romance, and there was definitely potential there, but I didn't; I didn't hate it, I just didn't love it. The problem is that memory loss aside, Seraphina and Zen are already in love when the story begins. This is just a universal thing for me: I can't love a romance if I don't see it develop from the beginning. If you don't have that problem, then you might love this romance! But as much as I tried, I just didn't connect to it fully. Zen is totally a sweet character, and with more development I think I could have really loved the romance, but it just wasn't all there for me. There are some flashbacks to help us relive the beginning of the romance, but again, it just wasn't quite enough to get me to love it.
Okay, moving on! Overall, I adored this book. It is super action-packed and there are loads of twists and turns. There is one twist in particular that I feel like I'm a bit stupid for not having seen coming, but OMG it blew me away and I LOVED it!! Towards the end, it was a bit of a mindfuck at times, but that's one of the things that really drew me in. I love a complex story that can be so baffling that you need to take a time out to process it.
Unremembered also has a great ending. This is the first book in the series, so there is still an opening for it to be continued, but things do get wrapped up super nicely and there's not much of a cliffhanger. And despite my lack of enthusiasm for the romance, the ending still had me Awww'ing!
I kind of feel like I'm not saying enough with this review, but the problem is that all the juicy bits are spoilers! There's so much that I want to say, but I can't say it because I don't want to ruin the story for anyone. This book is almost like putting together a puzzle. There are so many pieces that Seraphina picks up along the way, but then everything at the end comes together beautifully to form an overall picture that finally makes sense. Even the small details that you thought you had figured out, suddenly come into focus even more at the end.
If it doesn't bother you that this plot has "been done before" (click the spoiler tag to see what I mean. It is sort of a spoiler, but it gets revealed at the 35% mark—so not that far in) Seraphina was actually "created" in a lab. She is a genetically enhanced human/robot combination. The corporation who created her intended for her to be the 'perfect' human and she escaped from their facility. Now they're after her to get their trillion dollar project back. then I highly recommend this book! It's a great story and will definitely keep you engaged!
