A renowned musician retires and gives a young rival his 17th century viola de gamba. This novel examines the relationship between the musician and the instrument - their interdependence and their separate stories once parted. Lynne Alexander, an American, was a professional harpsichordist until she gave up her musical career in 1981 and turned to writing fiction. Her first novel, "Safe Houses", was published in 1985.
