Tragically, increased longevity in developing countries has recently coincided with massive migrations and a series of disasters which have had serious repercussions for many old people and their families. This is the first in-depth study of the phenomenon, and it proposes a new approach. Ken Tout describes the present situation, suggests solutions to problems, and outlines some programmes already in use. He also highlights lesser-known factors which can further
complicate the existing problems of an ageing population, and concludes that if we are to build structures for the future, we must stimulate awareness of the problems and provide resources for tackling them.
