Working class Londoner Tom McCarthy describes his time in the Grenadier Guards between 1944 and 1947, including his involvement at the Nuremburg trials. The book tells of his call-up, and initial training in Caterham, where he was on a charge within hours of arrival. The book describes how, after a period in Hawick, McCarthy volunteers for special duties and flies to Germany. The story recounts the atmosphere and goings on in Nuremburg, the dangers (McCarthy was twice caught in ambushes and badly injured) and the riotous exploits of the local soldiers.
