This is a musical bedside book - a collection of writings about music, musicians, music critics, music lovers and music haters, performances, musical instruments and musical history by authors ranging from St Augustine, Monteverdi and Samuel Pepys to Stravinsky and P.G. Wodehouse. All aspects of music are mingled here, whether in poetry, prose, literature, criticism, letters, memoirs or the occasional ancedote and the selection is linked irregularly by comments and explanatory asides by the editors. John Amis is a well-known media figure - member of the "My Music" team. Michael Rose is the joint author of "The Birth of an Opera", a radio series, as well as articles for the "New Grove" and the "Oxford Companion to English Literature".
