Herman Buchman had emigrated to the United States from Germany, lost his wife, and then had to give up his young son for his own safety. Becoming an itinerant bookseller, Buchman then bought Solomon Freeman, a freed slave whose family was shanghaied onto a slave ship in the East and split up on an auction block in the South. Herman is prepared to teach Solomon to read, pay him for his work, and give him his freedom, so they can work to their mutual advantage.
