The iolaire and New Year's Day by William Hershaw and Ann McCluskey It is 1918, the Great War is over. The men from Lewis and Harris are coming home on His Majesty's Yacht but the horror is not over for the islanders. The loss of the ship on New Year's Day 1919 is one of the most tragic events to befall the Western Isles, as over 200 Lewis and Harris men were drowned in sight of Stornoway harbour lights. Two new plays which deal with the Iolaire disaster and its off ect on the people of Lewis and Harris. An Iolaire by William Hershaw and Ann McCluskey has recently been performed by pupils from Stenhouse Primary School and Tynecastle High School in partnership with Iomairt Ghaidhlig Dhun Eideann. Funded by Bord na Gaidhlig, the pupils have taken the play to Stornoway and Tarbert as well as The National Library of Scotland, The Netherbow Arts Theatre and The Scottish Parliament. New Year's Day by William Hershaw is a play about life and death, religious and cultural inheritance that brings the story of the Iolaire into the twenty first century.
