This study examines the current state of banking within Europe. Banking in general is experiencing greater deregulation, allowing stronger competition - and yet a more restrictive regulation of supervision. This more challenging environment is stimulating consolidation and corporate restructuring within the EU banking industry, as banks seek greater productive efficiency. The authors address a number of key questions: do big bank mergers lead to greater efficiency within a country?; would cross-border bank mergers lead to greater efficiency?; will a single European banking market lead to significant cost benefits?; does efficiency differ across ownership types in European banking?; and how do the efficiencies of the various European banking systems compare?
