This study of the transformation of the French Socialist Party from a marginal group of the Left in 1969, to the party of government following Francois Mitterrand's victory in 1981 was first published in June 1984. It has now been revised and updated to take into account the slide in the Socialist Party's fortunes which culminated in the election of a right-wing majority to Parliament in March 1986.
