This text is an examination of environmental and cultural changes in Scotland from the post glacial period to around 1000 AD. It provides a broad view of the environmental and early human history of Scotland, with chapters on the environmental back-drop focus upon climate change, landform and soil development, and vegetation and faunal change. Discussion involves their influence upon human history, for example, sea-level change and Mesolithic occupation; soil deterioration and the intensity of land utilization during the Bronze and Iron Ages. The archaeological chapters cover the Mesolithic to early Norse periods, and the authors emphasise the environmental context of cultural development.
