This introduction to politics introduces the variety of political systems and the main political movements of the modern world, the issues which dominate political debate on the eve of the 21st century, and the ways in which these might be resolved. It focuses on the role of the democratic state in coping with the challenges of ecological crisis, information technology, nationalism, changing concepts of gender and the unequal distribution of wealth within and between states. The book should encourage the reader to look for politics beyond the usual narrow definition. Rather than confining iself to the national government level, it includes work and social situations in its analysis, looking at tribal, feudal and dynastic societies and at local and international levels. Basic concepts such as power, liberty and justice are explored from a variety of political perspectives, and different models of democratic government are compared.
