A guide to the remains of the Romano-British settlement Letocetum, or Wall Roman Site, near Litchfield in Staffordshire which demonstrate the achievements of the Romans in Britain. The site was a staging post lying alongside Watling Street, which was the principal route through England to North Wales and Ireland. Much of the business of Imperial Rome depended upon official couriers who travelled the comprehensive road network. The routes were marked at suitable intervals by places where one could get a change of horses or obtain lodgings for the night at a hostel. At Wall, traces of the hostel and the public baths of a small settlement including cold, warm and hot baths, with hypocausts and furnaces still survive. The guide explains the history of Letocetum and the excavations, currently displayed in the site museum, are illustrated.
