From ancient Egypt onward, illustrators have endeavoured to capture the character of that notoriously illusive animal, the cat. A celebration of the cat in illustration, this book reproduces illustrations from artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Durer, Arthur Rackham and Aubrey Beardsley. Also included are images from Edward Gorey's version of T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of "Practical Cats", and Kathleen Hale's "Orlando". Some of the illustrations, like Sir John Tenniel's Cheshire Cat for Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". Others, such as the cats shown in the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Luttrell Psalter, may be new to some readers.
