Since then, the outlook has inevitably changed, although the generation of Boulez, Stockhausen, Babbitt and Berio still dominates the first half of the book, just as the innovations of the postwar period remain decisive influences on music today. This edition brings the story up-to-date by covering important developments of the 1980s and by reassessing, with the advantage of a longer perspective, the music of the 1960s and 1970s. The lists of recordings have also been fully revised.
