This is an Auckland tale about the people of Mangawhau (Mt Eden) and Awhitu on the Manukau Harbour. Puhi-huia fall in love with Ponga and runs away to Awhitu with him, causing all sorts of ructions between the tribes. Puhi-huia proves herself a woman to be reckoned with, refusing to retum home to Mangawhau. She fights off several women of her own tribe to stay with Ponga, proving herself worthy of making her own decision about who to marry. Both families are forced to capitulate in agreement, such is her powerful statement in this book. Peter Gossage strikes again with his unique style of illustration and succinct telling of a little known tale.
