In recent years New Zealand has become increasingly ethnically diverse as a result of changes to immigration policy. With increasing diversity has come not only the challenge of understanding people from varying cultures but also the potential for newcomers to enhance New Zealand society as they encourage us to look beyond our narrow cultural bounds to the wider world. In 1995 The New Settlers Focus Group in Hamilton identified a need for readily accessible information about the background of different ethnic communities so that the staff of voluntary and statutory agencies could better understand their clients. This book is the result of their research. In a friendly and accessible way, the book introduces the geography, history, language and religion of 40 ethnic groups as well as cultural issues such as etiquette, families, titles, food, dress, rites of passage and body language. Information on the Baha'i, Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Sikh faiths is also included.
