The introductory chapter discusses the growth of cities, and in particular the urbanization of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The author then goes on to describe a variety of contemporary urban problems; pollution, water supply, transport and housing. The text also examines the social divisions which exist in cities, between rich and poor and different racial and religious groups. The book concludes by discussing urban planning and the way in which it may help to alleviate the problems of cities in the future.
Tony Reynolds is an urban geographer who has taught for many years at Brighton Polytechnic and at colleges in the United States. He is currently lecturing at a sixth form college.
