This series covers a wide range of social questions and is designed to promote discussion among children. In this book the author examines what it means to be healthy and fit. He considers food, exercise and mental health and various treatments available to help particular health problems. With a brief history of the ways in which people in the past have attempted to stay fit and healthy, Wheatley encourages readers to discuss their own physical and mental health, self-abuse and preventative medicine. He attempts to look into the future by discussing alternative medicine, health "fads", private health care and treatments that may be developed in years to come. The case studies highlight health problems faced both by patients and health workers - for instance one study takes the case of a girl suffering from anorexia nervosa, while another looks at an NHS nurse considering working in the USA. The case studies have been taken out of copyright, so that they can be copied and distributed in the classroom. This series is intended as background reading for students of GCSE and Standard Grade in Scotland.
Tony Wheatley has a CNAA post-graduate diploma in Health Education and has spent eleven years as a Health Education Officer and District Health Education Officer. He is a full member of the Writer's Guild of Great Britain.
