American Brett Curtis may not be the most refined gentleman, but he’s just the person to help Lady Emily Chandler. Lady Emily is a woman struggling to come grips with the loss of her fiancé, Jason. Brett is determined to find his cousin and bring him back to assume his duties as Duke. The two team up and the sparks begin. Their personalities clash initially which lightens the otherwise emotional story.
I loved Brett’s personality. He had a devil may care attitude and fanned his nose at much of England’s societal standards. He brought out the best in Emily. The very talented author did a wonderful job of portraying these characters with real emotions. Brett fought to overcome his jealousy over Emily’s devotion to Jason even while helping her to find out the truth about him. Even as Emily seeks to find the truth about her former fiancé she finds herself attracted to Brett. That tension makes up the basis for this story and the focus on their relationship versus their loss is what makes this books such a good read.
The storyline draws you in and takes you on a ride that is steamy, sad, funny, and full of suspense. I loved seeing the evolution of their relationship. I really felt like they were falling for each other instead of an instant “Oh my, I’m in love” the author writes so that the conclusion is apparent for the reader and characters. It seemed more like a natural progression than an instantaneous contrite “I’m at the end of the story let’s fix the end” sort of story. I really appreciate her for that. I’m not sure if there is a prequel to this book. Some of the characters that were referenced were from a previous book, but I don’t think it detracts from the story to read this book as a standalone. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and characters.
