Cambridge Reading is a major scheme providing stimulating books and support materials for the teaching of reading throughout the elementary years. Key features include: a coherent yet flexible structure for teaching and learning; a variety of attractive picture books; a balance of text types and genres, including stories, poems and information books; an integrated phonics programme; comprehensive support materials. The Beginning to Read Developing Sight Vocabulary non-fiction titles will introduce childen to the non-fiction genre: contents pages, indexes (at stage C) and layout. The texts cover four text types: reports, recounts, procedures and explanations. One of our main objectives is to make the books relevant to the children's own experiences. Topics such as making maps, going swimming and forecasting the weather are topics from the child's own environment, which have the potential to lead into activities involving the children's writing on a similar theme.
