This work explores the links between the public and private worlds of local politicians. Based on interviews with more than 100 political activists and their husbands, wives or other partners, supplemented by data from self-completion diaries, this study challenges accepted views regarding the nature and size of councillors' workloads, and goes on to develop a three-part typology of members' roles. Throughout the book, the authors emphasize the ways in which both the gender of the activist and her or his party affiliation have a crucial impact on political style.
