1910 Tryon Dunham was a young lawyer taking a short cut across a train track when he encounters a young lady in distress. He comes to her rescue by helping her get away from the area and ends up taking her to dinner at a friend's house. The young lady remains a mystery as the night continues not offering many clues to her identity. However a beautiful performance on the piano and her actions all indicate a well educated, highly skilled gentlewoman. After putting her on a train for Chicago with just a little money, and a few personal items Tryon can not stop thinking about the mystery woman he called Mary. Meanwhile, in Chicago, Mary is finding work as a servant and trying to stay hidden.
