This volume forms part of the "Life and Times" series of compact and accessible biographies which cover key political, literary and musical figures. This title is about the life and work of Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956), most famously known as a playwright, with his works including "The Threepenny Opera", "Mother Courage" and "The Life of Galileo" and many others. This biography also introduces Brecht the poet, Brecht the writer of prose and Brecht the literary scholar. The author argues that all of these themes are informed by the metaphor of exile (Brecht fled Germany at the the end of February 1933). After the war he returned and became the most prominent writer of the newly formed East Germany - the GDR.
