In 1864,Young Petrus Wagter leaves his Transvaal farm to explore Africa. In 1899 he returns with a community of coloured people. Rejected by white colonial authorities and black tribes alike, these people had no home until Petrus brought them to his farm. The South African War starts. After quickly building a small house, Petrus joins, leaving a coloured youth Klein (Small) Piet in charge. Petrus dies in the war, Klein Piet and his wife are murdered in the house. Evicted and scattered, the community never loses touch, and the house becomes their rallying point. Apartheid collapses. The new government decides to build a massive dam on Petrus Wagter's abandoned farm . The community converges on the farm, determined to take back their land. Incidents occur that some put to Petrus Wagter's ghost protecting his house, which must go to make way for the dam.
