Al Waters writes under a pseudonym for the local paper. He is a restaurant critic whose column has the town all-abuzz. They love his scathing, witty reviews. He considers himself a food snob, and this Brit sees Milwaukee as a stepping stone to more important venues.
Lou is about to have the worst day of her life when she shares a brief conversation with Al at the local farmers market. After receiving an anonymous tip Al dines at Lucella’s on that very same evening. He writes one of the most scathing reviews of his career. When the review publishes, Al again stumbles into Lou at a pub. She is drowning her sorrows and he is celebrating his latest success. Chance has them agreeing not to discuss work and a friendship begins..a beautiful friendship that slowly transforms both characters as it moves slowly toward romance. Reichert brought these characters to life, flaws and all. Their romance while low on heat still managed to sizzle as my heart did flip-fops. Theirs is the types of romances we dream about as little girls. It was awkward, adorable and genuine. She made rain beautiful, magnets enchanting and cooking so incredibly sexy-it should be illegal.

Secondary characters gave this story an unexpected depth. I found myself caring for them and wanting to know more. John the awkward, delightful co-worker at the paper had me smiling and Lou’s second chef and pastry chef need their own story. This is a standalone, but Reichert has characters here worth writing about and I want to go back to Milwaukee. She made the town chic and a place I now want to visit. An older German couple who frequented the restaurant stole my heart and even made me weep. The author gave the story a small-town feel and I loved that none of her characters were cardboard.
While one could argue it was predictable, the romance and characters were not. I closed the novel with a smile. I totally recommend you pick up, The Coincidence of Coconut Cake. This is Reichert’s debut novel and her writing is magic from the flow to the characters I could find no fault.

No sé si alguna vez lo comenté, pero tengo una obsesión con la repostería. No puedo ni siquiera prender el horno, aun así eso no me priva de ver programa de repostería que encuentre (Cake Boss en H&H es uno de mis favoritos ¡Todas las cosas que hacen!). Sé que algún día me armaré de valor y empezaré a hacer galletas. Algún día…
The Coincidence of Coconut Cake me gustó un montón desde el inicio porque aparte de la comida, tiene otra cosa que particularmente me interesó. Y es que como dice en la sinopsis, Al, es reseñador, pero no en blogs como yo (go me!) sino en un periódico, es un columnista. ¿Por qué me emocionó tanto? Porque eso es lo que quiero, una de las razones por las que me niegue tanto a empezar con videos es porque lo mío son las letras, escribir lo que pienso. Al, al igual que yo (go me!), escribe con un sobrenombre (aunque el de él es más creativo que el mío ¬¬), y me gustó ver como su manera de escribir progresa durante el libro, ya que al principio no tiene mucho encanto, considerando que se recalca en el libro que cada vez es más conocido, sé que cada quién tiene su manera de escribir, es solo que al inicio parecía que Al solo nombraba cosas como un robot, y al avanzar la historia notas mucho el cambio. Se centra más en las sensaciones que el producto o el entorno, y eso es lo que yo valoro en una reseña, que si bien es una opinión no significa que no pueda transmitirte emociones también.

That is the way, not something to mourn. Only mourn those who haven’t lived, who haven’t found love. They deserve your sadness, not us.”
También me encantó la personalidad de Lou, se permite llorar un día y levantarse al otro. Me gusta como a pesar de que puede muchas veces caer en lo fácil, sigue con su plan original. Me gusta cuando habla del control, de que el que te hayan lastimado no significa que te hayan destruido. Y que las segundas oportunidades no siempre significan equivocarte dos veces.
The Coincidence of Coconut sí, tiene algunas cosas que criticar, algunas cosas son demasiado obvias para dejarlas pasar, aun así ha sido una lectura que me encantó desde el inicio hasta al final. Es una de esas pocas veces que un libro me hizo soltar una lágrima por la razón correcta y no necesariamente con los protagonistas.
