John Virtue is one of Britain's most important contemporary landscape artists. The experience of landscape is a constant theme in his work resulting in paintings of vigour and sublime invention. Since moving to Exeter, Virtue has continued the intensity of his exploration of the landscape around the River Exe. He has made a series of new works for Tate St Ives which surround the viewer within a total experience of the painted landscape. This book is the first in a new series of hardback publications produced by Tate St Ives in partnership with Tate Publishing. It contains an insightful essay by Paul Moorhouse, Curator Tate Collection, which is the broadest interpretation of Virtue's work to date, and places his art in the context of the British landscape tradition.
