A difficult task in energy policy is to identify the current and long-term challenges clearly, and to give each goal the appropriate weight. This calls for a continuous analysis of market developments, long-term perspectives and options for policy measures, along with their impact, advantages, limitations, related opportunities and risks. This work explores the anaysis of energy markets. It explains that analysis can be improved by using energy indicators, which help to identify critical trends well in advance and monitor whether energy markets are on track towards sustainability.
