In this lecture, the author enlarges on his views of science, society and the processes of evolution. He considers what exactly the roles of individuals are in Darwin's world and asks what status evolution grants us as individual human beings. He discusses new developments in evolutionary theory and suggests what these might mean for the concept of individuality. Finally, he looks at the discrepancies between our assumptions about the nature of the world, often based on our personal hopes, and the true nature of Nature.
