This text explores the role of entrepreneurship within an economy. It is presented in three sections which broadly reflect the movement from theory through practice to policy. Debates in theory are reconciled by the introduction of three distinct categories of entrepreneurship. Different economic contributions associated with each then enable a more targeted approach to policy design. By blending theory, practice and policy, the authors give an insight into the problems of defining entrepreneurship, the types of entrepreneurship that exist, the constraints that entrepreneurs face and a rationale for economic performance. This approach also demonstrates how the study of entrepreneurship helps to explain economic performance at both macro and micro levels and suggests how differences in entrepreneurial activity between countries can explain disparities in relative economic performance.
