What it takes was conceived by Putney-based professional photographer, Julian Andrews, as a celebration of the unique annual Putney to Mortlake Boat Race. He followed both the Oxford and Cambridge squads for several months, often living with them for days at a time. His record captures their lives, both on and off the water, as they strove to win a place in their respective crews. His journey took him from skiing in Switzerland and rowing in Spain in the harsh depths of winter, as well as hours on various stretches of water in the UK. His pictures encapsulate critical sporting moments; the pain of top-level training; the beauty of the river in its different moods; the emotion of the sportsmen and the background of student life. The resulting photodocumentary is both a beautifully crafted book and a collectable historic record of a unique event.
