Mary Barton (1848), read by Maggie Ollerenshaw, tells the story of our heroine, who is torn between two lovers. North and South (1855), read by Jenny Agutter, is a largely autobiographical story. A genteel countryside family are shocked by grimy and squalid inner-city conditions when they move into town. The daughter, Margaret Hale, vows to promote equality for workers. As she befriends the working-class families, she starts to discover herself, too.
