This work describes the attempts made by Schinkel in the mid-19th century to make neoclassical architectural reconstructions of the two Pliny Villas and the way in which the architect detached himself from Renaissance and baroque ideas in the process. The book also covers similar work by Schinkel on the Royal Palace at the Acropolis and the Orianda Palace. In the case of the Royal Palace at the Acropolis, Schinkel referred not to literary descriptions, but to a standard architectural work, "The Antiquities of Athens" by Stuart and Revett. The late style displayed by Schinkel reached its apogee with the Tsar's Orianda Palace in the Crimea, where the ideas developed by the architect in the work on the Pliny Villas is demonstrated in the many ways that the sophisiticated layout of the paths produces effects like a stage set, structured by the sightlines of Lennes's landscape garden.
