This book examines a wide-range of techniques, technologies and systems used in wide area network design, with a strong emphasis on practical applications of network design using worked examples throughout. It takes the reader through the entire network design process starting with the engineering design cycle, including network layers, SLAs, creating a network topology, routing and metrics, failure analysis, address planning and network clock synchronisation. It is suitable for second and third year courses on Network Design in both CS and EE departments, as well as post-graduate programmes. The book will come with a network design tool called Nortel networks Netcalc Data Planner. This will be delivered on a CD Rom along with sample networks for use with selected end of chapter exercises.
