She Who Knows No Fear was different from what I had expected. Not just in the way it was written, but also the content. The focus was more on abandonment anxiety disorder and isn’t as much about Cassie’s husband disappearing. . .
It was interesting to read about what it was like in 1963 Hawaii from the perspective of one who had grown up there. While there were not a lot of details about it, there were some fun tidbits. The description of the shack where Cassie’s grandmother had lived had me dying to see it!
Philippians 4 was a key passage that touched Cassie as she struggled with fear. As a verse that is near and dear to my heart, I loved seeing it used here as it was. Cassie’s stepmother Hannah was very sweet and full of faith.
On a less positive note, the writing felt stilted, making it harder to relate to and engage with the characters and story. Discussions of Cassie’s abandonment issues felt contrived and unnatural. The several favorable mentions of Hawaiian spirits bothered me. It is one thing to read about mythical creatures in fantasy or paranormal books. Here it was hinted at that they are real and active in the lives of people without showing them as evil, which the Bible clearly describes.
I did not read the first book. Though it might have explained some things at the beginning of this one, the important points were covered and I didn’t feel lost.
