This volume explores the challenge facing progressives, in Europe and the USA, who wish to address the problems of inequality and insecurity, while taking on board changing economic realities as the world reaches the threshold of the new millennium. The egalitarian goals of full employment, high-quality, universal welfare provision and greater equality, can sometimes seem an impossible dream in a world of economic globalization, fiscal constraint and social change. The contributors to this volume include senior policy-makers in international institutions, leading trade unionists and researchers, from many different countries in the industrialized world. Their essays divide into four broad themes: firstly, there is a series of contributions which examine changes in the world economy; secondly, there is a comparative analysis of unemployment and labour market reform; a third group of contributions focuses on taxes and public finance; and fourthly, there is an investigation into new partnerships between unions and other actors in society, to begin a define to progressive agenda in the space between government and the market.
