Efficient use and management of water is a crucial mechanism enabling the sustainable use of water, reduced total costs, more reliable supply and improved water quality. In many cases it is the only cost-effective option for ensuring adequate supply. In the last decade numerous local and national initiatives have been developed in this area, tackling the numerous facets of this issue: demand management, water conservation, integrated resources management, saving or recycling. To share exchange information about these diverse approaches and discuss the most successful programmes over 300 of the world?s experts assembled in Tenerife to hear and discuss more than 120 presentations. From this large programme, following peer review, 16 articles have been selected for publication that address topics of drought management, urban water efficiency strategies, public engagement with water conservation and efficiency programmes, demand forecasting, distribution networks and water loss reduction. With papers providing object lessons from varied urban situations around the world, these proceedings constitute an essential source of information and insight for anyone involved in the planning, management or operation of water supply systems.
