When Johnny Able, reared since infancy among the pirates of the East African coast, miraculously reappears at Strenshaugh Hall, at the end of Queen Victoria's reign, his grandfather is delighted. His lordship's dreams of his heir's marriage to the shy and virtuous Rose appear to be fulfilled. But Johnny's upbringing has left him sadly unfitted for his elevated role.
