The very opening scene of the novel prepares the readers to meet the people of a house which is dominated by the authoritative mistress of the house. In the first scene, Mrs. Traquair Campbell's actions and activities, and how she is obliged to perform her duties, for the mistress of the house reveal the very fact that status and the difference of stations is one of the major themes of the novel.
The mother is highly authoritative and even with the daughter she deals in a very strict and formal manners. It presents the manners of the time when prosperity was the reason behind arrogance and authoritativeness.
