"Clarence" by Bret Harte revolves around the central charater, the protagonist of the story Clarence Brant. He is the President of the Robles Land Company; he is the husband of the rich widow of John Peyton, of the Robles Ranche.
The very first opening paragraph of the story prepares us for the life and dealings of the protagonist. Clarence Brant is somewhat distracted, hollow, and definitely deprived of all the happiness which a home provides. He does have a beautiful home but it is not a home for him in the real sense. He feels a sense of loneliness which continues to grow upon him every day and it returns with greater vigor.
