The Road to Emily Bay' tells the story of Thomas Tyndale, a farmer's son from Grantham in Lincolnshire, and the girl who loves him, Sarah Fordham, the only daughter of a wealthy landowner. Based around actual events, the narrative tells how Tom is drawn inexorably into the powerful movement for political reform that grew in England as a direct consequence of the Industrial Revolution. As Tom's activities gradually turn him into an enemy of the state and towards an inevitable showdown with the authorities, Sarah is forced into choosing between him and the aristocratic heir to a neighbouring estate. Emily Bay is a real and beautiful place located on the western coast of tiny and remote Norfolk island, in the South Pacific. But for all its beauty, Norfolk Island has a truly gruesome history. For a short period during the height of the British Empire, it was the Guantanamo Bay of its day, housing the Empire's most ruthless criminals - or so it was said. .
