This series provides a complete coverage of the systematics, biology and ecology of this important family, the katydids or bushcrickets, for Australia. It is the monographic treatment of this group in Australia and adjacent islands. Only approximately 100 species of Tettigoniidae have hitherto been described and based on fieldwork and examination of specimens in biological collections it appears that this is only about 10% of the total. The Tettigoniidae will be covered in a series of hardcover books to appear at irregular intervals each treating one or more subfamilies. The books will be richly illustrated, each containing coloured plates. Where possible, eggs of species will be illustrated and described. Keys, tables, descriptions and maps will allow the reader to identify specimens with relative ease. Complete locality data will permit conservationists, environmental managers, ecologists, behaviourists, evolutionary biologists and systematists to extract the information they require for their purposes. Oscillograms of the calling songs of most species will be presented.
In addition, three CDs will be published with Volumes 2,4 and 6, providing the calling songs for most species, very often of the holotype itself. This will be of considerable use as a means of verification of species identification.
