Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston ,Massachusetts in 1809. His university and Army career were short lived and he began to work for various periodicals and journals . It was in these periodicals that Poe began to develop his literary style. His works often dealt with mystery and the macabre ,although he is now acknowledged as one of the pioneers of the Detective fiction and Science Fiction genres. Although in his lifetime he did have some success with his short stories and poems, these did not provide a steady income and he faced financial difficulties for the rest of his life. On October 3rd 1849 Poe was found delirious on the streets of Baltimore and died a few days later. Towards the end of the 19th Century, Poe's fame began to grow not just in the United States but around the world. He is now seen as the master of the macabre and his short stories acknowledged as classics in their genre. His poetry has steadily been appreciated by millions especially The Raven, Eldorado and Annabel Lee.
