The causes and effects of fantasy and horror films in the silent cinema. Using the French description 'fantastique' to describe the whole genre of horror, fantasy and science fiction films, this is a serious attempt to categorize these films although several problems arise. Many science fiction films contain elements of fantasy, while others cross over the line into horror. And when you consider that numerous horror films merely employ science fiction as window-dressing then any system of classification becomes less than satisfactory. If, during the following (based on this writer's original series of articles for Flickers magazine in the '80s), you find yourself disagreeing with the author's definition of a film, then please remember, that in the final analysis, the choice of label is - indeed must be - a purely personal one.
