A study of leisure activities in the Cumbrian region between the mid-Victorian period and the eve of World War II. The book addresses the question of social control and the related question of the commercialization of leisure. The book attempts to investigate the extent to which "aspirations and desires" in the matter of leisure activities changed in Cumbria during the period concerned, and to assess the factors, not excluding attempts at social control and the development of the leisure industries, which influenced change. Particular emphasis is placed on the question of women's leisure and the attempt to integrate it into the pattern of development in leisure as a whole. The book considers the extent to which the leisure activities in this region became integrated into the broader national leisure culture during the period in question. The book is based partly on documentary and partly on oral evidence, the chapter on leisure activities within the home, in particular, is heavily reliant on oral evidence.
The area chosen for the study is the old counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, together with Lancashire "north of the Sands", these areas form the present day county of Cumbria.
