Ashleigh Merritt: How would you describe the music that you play?

Robert Forster: It's like running water off thin, white strips of aluminium. . .

Merritt: Will you be the future of rock and roll?

Forster: I, I, I doubt it. We could be.

The Go-Betweens were Australia's most artistically successful and influential rock group of the 1980s. Their roots lay in the 1970s in the oppressive, endless summer heat of Brisbane. They were at various times outrageous, absurd and manic. Their music was elegantly crafted pop and their lyrics were intellectual, evocative and distinctly Australian.

This book is more than a bland detailing of gigs and chart positions. It portrays real people who happened - through their politics, egos and creative urges - to become swept up in a rock movement that changed other people's lives as much as it changed their own.
