Part of a series which has been specially written for the National Curriculum, this science book for Key Stage 3 follows a theme-based approach with conceptual "threads" linking the units. Book 1's investigations are mainly set in "everyday" contexts. The themes are divided into units, each of which contains: core material which have been designed to allow all students to demonstrate achievement in keeping with their ability - practical investigations, data analysis and comprehension exercises are used to encourage students to develop their understanding; extention material for those who "finish early" - this is intended to develop understanding at a higher level than the core material; homework activities which are within the abilities of most students, and which take the work that has been covered in class into the home or local environment; and information which covers the National Curriculum programme of study, based on questions that students frequently ask. Investigative work - both practical and written - is a key feature of the series. As the students progress through book 3 towards Key Stage 4, the contexts increasingly become less familiar and more abstract.
Contexts and concepts are, however, revisited throughout the series in order to build on earlier experiences. Each chapter is carefully structured to introduce a subject, involve students in investigations, consolidate learning through comprehension and data handling exercises, and provide an accessible information summary for the topic. The materials can be used for continuous assessment or end-of-theme exercises. The themes within each book in the series are activity-based and the format is stimulating. The emphasis is on showing students how interesting science can be, and to give them a sound understanding of the world around them.
