This text widely used and highly regarded in it first edition, is intended for the core course in mechanics or strength of materials which is generally taught at the sophomore or junior level. Well known for its clarity and accuracy, the book also provides a wealth of problems, most of which are new in this edition. Tutorial software accompanies each book. The book is constructed in units, each consisting of one or several theory sections followed by sample problems and a large number of homework problems. Chapter 1 provides student with a review of concepts learned in the statics course. Noted for its clear explanations, the book offers students a better understanding of and an intuitive feel for problem-solving in a graphical format and in a numerical format. More than 80 percent of the problems are new and their number has been increased. Half of the examples, sample problems, and problems are in U.S customary units, half in S.I. units. Computer problems, four or more per chapter, have been added.
By solving them students will acquire a small library of programs which they will be able to use in later courses, Interactive tutorial software for IBM PCs is packaged with each book; each tutorial illustrates a specific concept in the text. New chapter-opening material states the prupose and goals of the chapter and describes the material to be covered and its application to the solution of engineering problems. A review and summary section has been added at the end of each chapter and includes helpful marginal notes. The optional material on singularity functions, now in chapter 7, is particularly well adapted to the use of computers.
