This volume examines the 322 Travel-to-Work Areas (TTWAs) defined in 1984 for the whole of Britain. National changes in employment are reflected in diverse experiences at the local level. TTWAs form coherent local labour market areas and represent the maximum level of spatial disaggregation for which unemployment data are published. The aim of this research is to develop classifications of TTWAs thus making possible the identification of the main dimensions of change at the local scale.
