This volume presents some of the first works by the young art critic and curator of exhibitions, Martin Maloney. Maloney has created large canvasses that present episodes in gay life in London, offering a view into transgressive life in the English capital. Maloney uses aggressive strokes to recount with immediacy and irony the daily moments of small groups of men. The results are portraits of men who are unposed and imperfect, with unshaven faces, moustaches, body hair and awkward smiles dominate the canvas. A subtle sexual tension underplays the scenes, running alongside the search for romance that is a common theme in many of his pieces.
